Dear Big Bay Swim Participants and Supporters,
As you know, this year’s Jalna Big Bay Swim was firstly delayed by shipping in the channel then called off for safety reasons. This is the first time in 29 years that the swim has been called off for any reason.
This decision was made on the morning of the swim by the Williamstown Lifesaving Club due to heavy weather in the bay, with safety of the swimmers being the primary concern. While the cancellation is consistent with the conditions set out in the entry form, and the weather is something we cannot predict or control, we and our many sponsors are nonetheless disappointed that this year’s swim couldn’t go ahead.
We are pleased to say that we’re still able to provide the early bird prizes, which have been drawn. The winners are:
- Wetsuit donated by Entrix – Gaynor Blankley
- South Pacific 3 monthgym membership and 3 personal training sessions – Ben Morrison
- South Pacific 3 monthgym membership and 3 personal training sessions – Nick Dabner
- South Pacific 3 monthgym membership and 3 personal training sessions – Allan Ching
- Double pass to the Sun Theatre Yarraville – Jessica Naylor
- Double pass to the Sun Theatre Yarraville – Marcus Jones
The Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand primarily runs the Big Bay Swim to raise money for worthwhile charities such as the Challenge Cancer Support Network for children, The Les Twentyman Foundation for disadvantaged youth, breast cancer charities and many others.
We have incurred non-refundable expenses in hiring equipment and a timing contractor and acquiring permits. As this is a charity event, we would still like to offer as much of the proceeds to our charity partners as possible and will not be refunding the entry fees, which will be donated.
If you are an early bird entrant (entry prior to Feb 9th) and have not picked up your souvenir t-shirt and cap, it is available at Landingear Workwear, 1/241 Kororoit Creek Road, Williamstown.

On behalf of the club I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s 30th Big Bay Swim. It promises to be bigger and better than ever!
